It also contained tension and suspense and I found it utterly compelling. It was well written, easy to read and had a great plot. In addition, the book is littered with literary references which are integrated seamlessly into the storyline, as are excerpts from Clare’s diary and RM Holland’s short story, The Stranger. As the plot unfolds, the narrative alternates between these three women – Clare, Georgie and Harbinder, In many ways it is a classic whodunnit, but there are also hints of other genres including the psychological thriller and gothic horror. Enter Detective Sergeant Harbinder Kaur who has been put in charge of the case. The lines between the past and the present start to blur when a work colleague and friend of Clare’s is found dead in suspicious circumstances, with a quote from an RM Holland short story by her body. In her spare time she is writing a biography of the author RM Holland, a gothic writer who used to live in a building which is now part of the school and whose life was surrounded by mystery. Clare Cassidy lives with her 15 year old daughter Georgia and teaches English Literature at a local school. The Stranger Diaries is a contemporary Gothic thriller.

Yet the truth is, even with today’s cutting-edge technology, we need myths more than ever. In ancient times, in the absence of science, myths helped people make sense of the natural world. One of the villains says it best: “There are other human heroes at large in the scattered worlds and a spacegirl who must be stopped.” The melding of the two groups of friends is entertaining, and there’s realistic tension between Zita and Jack’s friend Lilly, who have very different styles of tackling problems. It’s up to Jack, Zita, and their pals to put an end to the invasion. With an army of angry giants bent on taking over Earth, the stakes are high. The book conveniently starts with a recap of their adventures thus far. Gr 4-7–In this epic crossover event, the stars of two of Hatke’s previous series, Jack and Zita the Spacegirl, join forces. I don't usually give in depth reviews on goodreads, but hope to talk about this more on YouTube. Written by a 12 year old girl, this is an ode to nature and all of the beauties we overlook every day. So for me - I am also beginning to deal with the college application process - there’s that sense of how personal this book is for me. At its heart, I think this book is a perfect conveyment of what it is really like to be a teenage girl growing up in our current society and what it is like to struggle with yourself, to struggle with your friends right before you go to college. Okay, so now that I’ve stopped crying again, let’s get to why this book is so good. This is going on my preemptive top ten of the year and no one can stop me. It has been a full month since I read this book and I am still so shook by it and so invested and, oh my god. This is one of those rare books that is an organic piece of life itself. □ Guess what the Dragons and Tea book club is reading for June 2019! |
